Needed to purchase a circular saw in order to cut bottom decking at a set depth.
Aft deck canvas cover sides were removed for alterations. The stair cover was also removed. it will have a zipper system installed so that it can be opened from both sides.
Ben Smith has begun work on the port engine and continues the project of cleaning and painting.
The Air conditioner raw water pumps pictured above should both be thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Test amperage draw and re-wire with proper cable and connector. missing cover plates replaced.
Fratelli log July 28, 2010
Purchased lumber and pry bars needed to move generator
Finished diconnecting generator fuel lines, hoses and electrical. Bolts holding down generator had to be cut or drilled out. The original design set the generator in place then finished building around it. Recommend that the new frame work be more modular in design allowing the generator to be easily removed and accessed for major overhaul and repair. Also, moving the generator forward 6-10 inches would allow better access all around.
Lifted generator base with pry bars and rolled the generator over using socket tools as rollers and a chain come-a-long

Project: Generator room
Objectives:
Empty room. Remove everything being stored in generator room to aft deck. Dispose of any unlabeled or undated fluids.
Prepare generator for moving. i.e. Hoses, wires, bolts etc..
Build temporary platform for generator to rest while repairs are made.
Clean all debris and contaminates on and around fuel tank and failed beam.
Replace failed beam
Open and inspect fuel tank. Empty contaminants and asses feasibility of reconnecting tank . Cap and plug all access to tank.
Neutralize or remove all rust and corrosion.
Clean and paint bilges
Clean and inspect generators. Prep and paint.
Log:
Wash down boat
Measure out generator room for materials needed to move generator.
Mail out Sunglasses left by guest
Label and disconnect all wires, bolts, fuel and exhaust lines from generator in preparation for moving
Pick up loaner come-a-long and high strength movers for generator project
Pick up Memory card for camera (To create video logs), Binder and sheet protectors for printed log
Generator project notes:
The wood base supporting the generator is in an advanced state of
rot. The wood was easily bored through using a screw driver. All wood will be replaced new. Ben Smith will hopefully be available to do all the prep and painting on the wood. The prep will be a combination of high strength epoxy sealant followed by a coat of paint.

Starboard Main Engine
Tools of the Trade
Sunday Recap:
-Pick up cleaning supplies, grinding wheels, gloves, brushes, denatured alcohol, masks, tarps and sponges.
-Master suite: covered rugs and bed with plastic tarps
-Scrub down rudder posts and begin prepping for sealant. Clean bilge area around post and begin prepping for painting.
-Starboard main engine: spot paint treated areas. Continue removing contaminants with special attention to sensitive areas that cannot be pressure washed.
-Research Vessel Management Program. Begin Gathering machinery info to input into program
July 23rd
Rudder shaft
Stuffing box
Remove corrosion and bring back to original bronze. Besides the aesthetics looking great, this will allow for a proper visual inspection of rudder shaft stuffing box.
Continue work on starboard main engine main engine. Treat rusted and bare metal with Ospho and prep areas for painting.
Pinhole leaks. This Section of raw water cooling system should be removed and brought to a welder. Have joint removed and new piece welded on.
Starboard main engine. Old paint is chipped off and rust is treated with neutralizer.
Rust turns black when it is ready to paint
Rudder post stuffing box
Continue the cleaning of rudder stuffing box. Using a diluted acid, scrapers and wire brushes. Access to the rudder post is difficult. Only one arm can be used affectively and visibility is limited. This will make the project time consuming.
What’s a stuffing box? In principle a stuffing box is identical to the packing nut on a common faucet. Its primary components are a threaded sleeve and a hollow nut through which the shaft passes. The sleeve - or sometimes the nut - is filled with rings of braided square flax rope that has been heavily impregnated with wax and lubricants. Tightening the nut compresses this packing against the shaft, forming a watertight seal while still allowing the shaft to turn.
Note: The mechanical drawing is of a propeller shaft but the stuffing box principle is the same.
Tasks Completed:
Began Painting of Starboard main engine
Fine sanded and added additional coat of paint to Cablemaster cover plate
Continue work on rudder shafts
Treated rust on main engines with Ospho
Removed plastic tarps and readied boat for over night guests
Met with Paul Brock and discussed strategy for a pro active maintenance program for all machinery on vessel.
